My Family Tree
It was only 10am, and the living room floor was buried in a mass of boxes and shredded paper, there were enough toys lying about to fill an FAO Schwarz, and the kids pretty much didn't know what to do with themselves. Later in the day when more relatives (and more presents) came, that's almost all it was. more.
In fact last year was the year of 'more'. And yet, quite possibly it was the year of less.
Sarah said it BEAUTIFULLY yesterday when contemplating what this year might be like if she packed up all her decorations and tried a new approach to Christmas. She said:
Now I'm not suggesting you remove all traces of modern day Christmas from your holidays this year. We will certainly not be doing that around here. (We're outnumbered in this house. A successful revolt would be a distinct possibility.) But we did want to do something a little more than just reading the Christmas story to our kids on Christmas morning. We wanted them to know more than just the fact that we celebrate Christmas because Jesus was born. We wanted are kids to begin to understand WHY he was born. So that's why I was so excited this year to come across an idea over at Shannon's that was completely new to me. The Jesse Tree. (Her links are here and here) The idea for the Jesse tree comes from Isaiah 11:1-2.
In fact last year was the year of 'more'. And yet, quite possibly it was the year of less.
Sarah said it BEAUTIFULLY yesterday when contemplating what this year might be like if she packed up all her decorations and tried a new approach to Christmas. She said:
"And I wonder if, on Christmas evening, I'd still feel that vague, unsettling unrest of soul I usually feel as I look around the spoils of the day and know that I missed something. That I spent the month trying to achieve and accomplish and attain, and that in the end it'll all be long gone, anyway. I wonder, if I spent the day in stillness before Him, would Christmas turn into something truly magical? Something satisfying?"Wow! She so eloquently put in words what I have been thinking for the last several weeks. And as if God using one member of her family to convict me wasn't enough, her grandmother, Judith, wrote on the same topic, and used a powerful quote from Billy Graham. For the first time in my life I realized I had more in common with the innkeeper than I did with the Shepherds and Wise Men. His quote:
"When Mary and Joseph needed a place for the Child to be born, the innkeeper wasn't hostile; but his inn was crowded, and his mind was preoccupied, like millions are today, as Christmas nears."This is not what I want for my kids. This is not what I want for myself. Instead of becoming so overcome with all the beauty of the holiday right in front of me, I want to be in AWE of the glory of God. To desperately seek him out like the wise men, and to humbly come before him like the shepherds. Laying aside all that seems important to me, to come and worship before him.
Now I'm not suggesting you remove all traces of modern day Christmas from your holidays this year. We will certainly not be doing that around here. (We're outnumbered in this house. A successful revolt would be a distinct possibility.) But we did want to do something a little more than just reading the Christmas story to our kids on Christmas morning. 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD -
The whole concept is to remind us that everything within the old testament leads up to the birth of Christ and our desperate need for a savior. A reminder that it's all linked together. That the Bible is not just a neat book filled with great little bedtime stories. I think that's been my favorite part of it. I've loved having discussions with my child about why we needed Jesus to come.
Shannon has set up a linky so that people can share the different ways their family is using this tool, so I thought I would join in and share ours with you. (click on the images to enlarge them.)
Each night we gather in the girls bedroom. Sporty and Posh take turns putting the ornaments up, and we read through a different passage of the Bible and emphasize how it points Jesus. We use a miniature Christmas tree, but some people use a branch or a banner with a tree drawn on it. Here's the tree that sits on the girls bookshelf in their bedroom. It was a whopping $7 at Hobby Lobby.

And here are a couple of the ornaments that we used from this book. The book also has devotionals for each story that we have adjusted to be more appropriate with the ages of our kids.

We simply printed out the pictures and then glued them to different colored paper. I hope that someday I'll be able to have a more three dimensional collection similar to Shannon's but for our first year, these are working great.
To get some more great ideas on how to use this with your family, go here. And if you do something different with your family to accomplish the same goal, I'd LOVE to hear it. Share it in the comments or leave the link to it on your blog.
And seriously, go back and read what Judith and Sarah wrote. It's really, really GREAT stuff!

23 talkin' back:
I love this post Addie. These thoughts have been bouncing around my head as well. I love having them so well articulated so that I can understand them so much more.
LOVE your new header! And ohmygoodness does your oldest daughter look EXACTLY like you!
I was a little behind on getting our Jesse Tree started so I just cut the picture out and stuck it on the tree. (I guess I may try that colored paper thing!)
It never fails. Every year I blink and I feel behind. Guess that about sums it up, huh.
I love the book you linked to. It makes all of this so simple. Thanks for sharing:)
It looks wonderful, Addie. You'll have fun throughout the year adding to your collection for next year. The year I started my Jesse tree, I began collecting ornaments in the early fall, so I wasn't too rushed. It was so much fun! Be sure and hit those after-Christmas sales!
Great post--
Great post Addie...after perusing around blog world it has had my heading thinking too.
I just bought my Jesse tree tonight and will share some posts/pics when we get some ornaments tomorrow.
Yours looks great!
Ad - This is beautiful. I'm going to link unless you email me and say NOOOOOOO! :-) I really needed to read this today....
The header is awesome.
Thanks for teaching my grandchildren the TRUE meaning of Christmas.
I can't wait to see what wonderful things God will do in their lives because you have chosen to lead them to Him this Christmas.
Bless you, truly loving momma,
I love it! You said it so perfectly. I really want my children to see the whole picture also. It's so funny how we all get caught up in the so much else this time of year. Thanks for the idea of how to bring it back into focus around our house!!
Whoa, what an amazing post. As my first Christmas with a child, I am working through how to celebrate the holiday in the future. This gave me great ideas, yet humbled me by how off my focus has been. I think I may print this out to keep.
Cool New Header! I really love this post. I might "steal" your idea and try something new for Christmas this year. I, too, want my girls growing up knowing the big picture not just the gifts. I have a plate in my kitchen that says this verse, I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children live in the truth, III John 4.
Oh, how I hope we as parents can give them that gift...the truth!
Addie, thank you for linking to my grandma! (and to me) When I read her post, I was stopped in my tracks.
The Jesse tree idea is a great one--I think we may do it next year. This year I'm just hoping to actually keep everyone alive and well through the holidays!
Why didn't you tell me that having three kids is this hard? I'm about to die:)
Absolutely beautiful new header design. Gorgeous.
It looks great! I'm a bit late in getting a "Jesse Tree" started but I think it's something I'd like to do next year. We're revamping the way we "do Christmas" so we'll have more of a focus on Christ. As shared in my blog today, I hope that the Jesse Tree will be a part of this change. I first read about it in October but have been slow to start. All of those sharing via Rocks in My Dryer are inpsiring me to go for it next year and take the time to do the ornaments up for next year. Hmmm . . . now, what to display them on.
Addie, thank you for linking to my daughter and my mother - felt wonderful to see that their writings touched so many. An honor to be in the middle of them - daughter of one, mother of one. Doesnt get any better than that!
What a wonderful idea - thanks for the links. I'm going to go read those other posts now!
I can't remember what it's called now [I'll try and check later] but there's an American 'classic' that a read a few years back called something like 'pull the plug on Christmas' which I found very useful to pare down the Christmas 'hype' to what was essentially important to us as a family.
Seasons greetings
Thank you for the encouraging Jesse Tree post! We too find this the highlight of our holyday season. To think of His Glorious Coming! Blessed to share the pilgrimage with you!
All is grace,
Ann Voskamp
What a beautiful post, Addie. Shannon's Jesse Tree idea is wonderful and I'm glad to see you and your girls enjoying this.
My mother and my niece never cease to amaze me. Thank you for pointing people toward them.
Hello! I came to your site from another blog, but I've been surfing around a while now and can't remember which one! Anyway, I saw in your profile that you like wearing baby clothes without puke on them - hahah! I've got twin 10 month old boys with severe reflux and I seriously agree with you on that one! I'm just starting to dare to wear "real" clothes again :) Keep up the good writing! SeaBird
